Backyard Leave No Trace

I went for a walk on the weekend. No doubt many others in New Zealand on a sunny Sunday did the same... I skipped the beach in favour of some shade:

A nice patch of kohekohe forest on a hill, not far from my house. In fact not far from many houses - this is a green island in suburbia I'm talking about..

And I was very impressed - for such an accessible, and well-used, walk - there was no litter, no graffiti and no vandalism.

Looks like the NIMBY (Not In My BackYard) mentality has an upside - when it is litter, graffiti & vandalism that is not wanted, and the backyard concept extends a little farther than the owner's fence...

It is fantastic to be able to go out and enjoy our green spaces without having to clean up along the way - whether it is a "wilderness" experience or a "backyard" park.

There is hope for "clean, green" New Zealand yet...
