The Canterbury trainer course over February 19-20 took participants up Bealey Spur for some diverse terrain. Beech forest and open tussock tops and some diverse weather too. It was a good lesson in impacts as there were quite a few others on the track. There was some very considerate behaviour and really friendly encounters. Some of the worst impacts were at a couple of fire sites. Despite fire bans in the area, some recent fires were evident and Kiwis still seem to think that everything disappears in a fire -metals such as foil in particular. But it takes an extremely hot fire to melt aluminium. Just pack it out. In addition, near the hut there had been quite a bit of chopping on live trees for firewood. In general though, the area had been well looked after and we enjoyed some inspiring scenery and experiences.
