In late January 2013 a group of Western Australian kayakers chartered a plane to access the Barnett River, a tributary to the Fitzroy River in Western Australia's remote Kimberley region. Whilst exploring this amazing river system the team raised funds for and practiced the principles of Leave No Trace Australia.
They spent two weeks completely kayak self supported, with no rafts carrying additional supplies. They had the pleasure of not seeing another soul for this time, a reason many of us seek refuge in the great outdoors. Although a drier than usual wet season resulted in lower flows than anticipated, some fantastic whitewater was encountered along with breathtaking gorges, waterfalls, swimming holes.
Wildlife included countless freshwater crocodiles, bats, amazing birdlife, one barramundi, one saltwater crocodile but the closest encounter of all was with a very big horned bull. This is certainly one trip to put on your bucket list.
