environmental education with student groups

Sometime in April I did a evening presentation to the students at OPC about the LNT principle 'Minimise the Effects of Fire'
There were 60 students and 6 supervising teachers involved. I got the students into groups of ten, gave them tarps and buckets of mineral soil (taken from a borrowing pit), had them collect some 'dead, down and dainty' firewood and taught them to make mound fires. Once we had burnt away all material involved in the fire, I explained to them they had just participated in a demonstration on one of the 7 LNT principles, and that we were going to go inside and learn about the other 6 principles. I then showed them a slide show on LNT then played the Dvd on LNT from the States.
It was an awesome night - I really enjoyed giving the presentation and the students really enjoyed participating. The presentation was on the first night of their course and during the week I taught them more about LNT as we went. At then end of the week when we were having a group debrief, I asked them what was one thing they had learnt this week that they would take home, and most said 'How to care for the environment' It was so cool! I often feel that students think envrionmental care is uncool, and it was so exciting that they were really into it!
