Living on an island nation means that we have an unusual ecosystem that has been isolated for ages. Strange and different plants and animals have evolved and adapted to the conditions here.
Today with international travel and tourism, new species are easily introduced accidentally. Didymo is pretty revolting and is an example of this. The best things we can do are to make sure our equipment is as clean as we can get it before we arrive in a new place or country. Tents can harbour all sorts of insects, the deep tread on boots with dirt can hold fungi, and fruit and vegies are potential trojan horses filled with who knows what.
Clean it, declare it or don't bring it. Otherwise the consequences can be massive.
