The Department of Conservation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Leave No Trace New Zealand that will see the two organisations collaborating on education and training opportunities focusing on responsible outdoor ethics and behaviour.
Leave No Trace New Zealand is a non-profit organisation that champions minimal-impact travel and recreation practices through outdoor ethics courses. Part of a global movement that has chapters operating in the United States, Canada, Ireland and Australia, LNT NZ has provided training courses to the likes of Outward Bound and the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre. It is already working with groups that operate widely in New Zealand's back country, including the Mountain Safety Council, Outdoors New Zealand and the New Zealand Alpine Club.
"This is a partnership based on synergy and outcomes," said LNT NZ Chair Chris North. "DoC has a responsibility to enable people to enjoy our public lands whilst ensuring that they are protected and that can best be achieved by educating for responsible behaviour by those who visit these special places. But DOC, in itself, is not a training provider – so that's where we can add real value.
"Our goal is to promote environmental awareness and stewardship, and this MOU is another step forward in connecting people with the New Zealand environment. The experience we have in this area is a major resource that the Department of Conservation can now take advantage of."
LNT NZ and DoC are now collaborating on a range of opportunities that are likely to target groups including young people and international visitors.
Dave Jane, Manager of the Recreation and Historic Unit with the Department of Conservation reinforces that value of this partnership to DOC. "Being able to enjoy New Zealand's conservation lands and waters is something that New Zealanders and visitors to this country hold dear but with that we all have a responsibility to ensure that these places are well looked after for the benefit of us all. The information and resources that Leave No Trace New Zealand have developed will help ensure that more people are aware of good environmental practices when they are out there enjoying New Zealand's special places".
Leave No Trace is looking forward to supporting the Department of Conservation in promoting and inspiring responsible outdoor recreation.
